Everybody will die one day....
Since the days of Ponce de León, if not before, people have been seeking the elusive Fountain of Youth. Until recently, such pursuits were the realm of quacks and charlatans. And there are still plenty of snake-oil salesmen out there on the Internet and in so-called anti-aging clinics, hawking everything from longevity-bestowing Ecuadoran waters (which are probably harmless) to growth hormones (which could be downright dangerous for adults). But serious scientists are now bringing respectability to the field, unraveling the secrets of aging on a cellular level and looking for ways to slow it down. And while the science is still young (so to speak), legitimate longevity-boosting treatments could be available in 10 to 15 years—although the gains would be more modest than in Kenyon's worms.

Gay marriage
A number of factors seem to play a role in swaying people one way or the other. For instance, 62 percent of Americans say religious beliefs play an important role in shaping their views on gay marriage. According to the survey, two-thirds of those who see marriage as primarily a legal matter support gay marriage. On the other hand, two-thirds of those who see it as mostly a religious matter (or equal parts religious and legal) oppose gay marriage.

The poor Bush administration
It took a while to discern the guiding ideology behind the Bush administration's poisonous science policies. The real problem wasn't tax cuts and war spending, even though the combination did strangle domestic programs so severely that scientists at the nation's premier physics lab were ordered to take unpaid leave, and the government is allocating 13 percent less to biomedical research in 2009 than it did in 2004. Nor was the culprit the sop that Bush offered the religious right in 2001 by banning the use of federal money for research on new lines of human embryonic stem cells, paralyzing the field for eight years and sending some of the nation's most promising young biologists overseas.

Fat, fat, thin
About six years ago, Diane and Jim McConnell and their son, James Jr., 11, embarked on a dramatic diet change. They decided to give up foods containing gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Sticking to the regimen is no easy feat—gluten is ubiquitous in the American diet, as well as in other nonfood products. Not only is it in almost every kind of commercially baked good and pasta, it's even in medications, lipsticks and Play-Doh.

Who forced shareholders and the public to bear the highest financial cost? Who, in short, is the Worst Banker in the World?

Bigfoot?
These are hard times for Bigfoot believers, a human subspecies that includes a fairly hairy collection of fantasists, charlatans, grifters and fools. But there is also a small coterie of serious scientists interested in the possibility—as they see it, the likelihood—that somewhere in the deep woods of North America enormous ape-men really are alive and well and just barely eluding detection.

There is no better way to attract reports of the paranormal than to write a story casting doubt on it, and attract them I did. Besides the usual ghost sightings, my favorite was from a nice man in Florida who told me about his wonderful typewriter (note: not a word processor): he would type a few letters of a word and the machine would fill in the rest, apparently having read his thoughts.

I think I'm going into a diet
A Web page labeled "Ana Boot Camp" recently offered its members a seemingly irresistible proposition: a 30-day regimen designed to help them drop some serious pounds, no exercise needed. The catch was that the group's members were to vary their daily caloric intake from 500 (less than half the daily minimum requirement for women recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine) to zero. They were supposed to track their progress, fast to make up for the days they accidentally "overate" and support each other as they worked toward their common goal of radical weight loss.

The true face of the Muslim
The attacks targeted the heart of India's financial district, but the shock waves were felt around the globe. On Wednesday, a group of heavily armed assailants carried out a series of coordinated strikes in Mumbai —killing at least 80, wounding hundreds more, and claiming an indeterminate number of hostages. A group calling themselves the Deccan Mujahedeen claimed responsibility for the mayhem, but their identity could not be immediately confirmed, and many terrorism specialists said they were unfamiliar with the name. Whoever did it took aim at Western passport-holders and prominent targets; among the locations hit were two major hotels, a train station and a hospital. Several top Indian security officials were among the casualties.

There is a movie, right?
"The butterfly effect" is a phrase that came to Hollywood and our culture from chaos theory and the abstract mathematical models of Edward Lorenz. The idea is that even the smallest alteration of the first cause in a series can produce a vast change in the final result. So in theory the slight alteration of the tiny breeze caused by a butterfly's wing could eventually change the course of a great hurricane. That is the theory. It always sounded ridiculous to me, until now.

Now, this is interesting:
It's a question that Genevieve Hartman has been rolling over in her mind for some time now. The 28-year-old vegetarian will be spending Thanksgiving at her boyfriend's professor's house in New York City. Thanksgiving used to be one of Hartman's favorite holidays , when she celebrated it with her vegetarian family in San Francisco. But ever since she moved to New York five years ago and began spending the holiday with relatives or friends, it's been a source of anxiety. Take the tofu dilemma: on the one hand, she doesn't want to get stranded at a turkey-heavy table without anything to eat, which might make her hosts feel bad. But she also doesn't want to bring attention to herself as needing "special foods," increasing the likelihood that she'll have to field questions about why she's skipping the turkey.

There's an e-mail making the rounds with a job description attached. If you apply, be warned: you will be burdened with "challenging" tasks "in an often chaotic environment" with "variable hours, which will include evenings and weekends and frequent 24-hour shifts on call." You must be "willing to be hated, at least temporarily." Oh, and you'd better love kids, because that's who you'll be working with all day. The job, of course, is "parent"—but it might as well be "pediatrician," which requires a lot of the same skills and then some. That's why lately I've been feeling sorry for pediatrics residents. They're often too busy wiping the noses and taking the temperatures of other people's kids to do likewise for their own.

The future of electricity
Batteries still won't evolve as quickly as computer-based technologies. The reason: a battery is based on a chemical reaction, which is limited by the laws of physics and the periodic table. Since Italy's Alessandro Volta first came up with the idea in 1800, batteries have generated electricity using the same basic principle.

Modern Pirates, can you believe in that?
It's a scene out of another century. On Tuesday night an Indian Navy vessel in the Gulf of Aden approached a ship thought to be manned by pirates operating from lawless Somalia . Although it was dark, Indian officers told news-agency reporters that they could see crew members on deck brandishing guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Volleys were fired, fire broke out on one of the pirate ships, and it sank. The crew escaped in a speed boat, the Navy ship in hot pursuit .

This is the latest wedge issue of the good-old-days crowd, supplanting abortion and immigration. But it is the writer's essays on the importance of clear language and independent thought that make him relevant. Consider this, from "Politics and the English Language": "The word Fascismhas now no meaning except insofar as it signifies 'something not desirable.' The last big bump among young voters came in 1972, the first presidential election after the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18. Despite revisionist history that suggests that all young people then were antiwar and counterculture, the youth vote split pretty evenly between George McGovern and Richard Nixon. Roughly half of those casting their first vote chose a man who was trounced on election night, and the other half chose a man who had to resign the presidency in disgrace less than two years later.

Now we are having to deal with the challenges: the restructuring of jobs, the energy problems … [Today] you've got this global financial system that is trying to respond to global financial flows that are massive. We've only got national supervision of the system … and that is one of the reasons we've got to reform it.

The need to be part of a community
As technology reshapes our world, as our "friends" become the people we know on Facebook as well as the ones we invite home for dinner, the definition of community is taking on radically new meanings. Nowhere is the concept of community more crucial than in religion. In the West, people traditionally worship together, in a group, in one room; that togetherness has theological import. In Christianity, the sacrament of communion underscores the unity of the faithful; consuming the consecrated bread and wine binds Christians with each other, with the saints in heaven and with the Lord.

And how this may affect us?
There are only two and a half months—76 days, to be precise— between Election Day and your Inauguration, and you will need every one of them to get ready for the world you will inherit. This is not the world you've been discussing on the trail for the last year or more: campaigning and governing could hardly be more different. The former is necessarily done in bold strokes and, to be honest, often approaches caricature. All candidates resist specifying priorities or trade-offs lest they forfeit precious support. You won, but at a price, as some of the things you said were better left unsaid. Even more important, the campaign did not prepare the public for the hard times to come.

But the tides of public opinion can turn quickly and mercilessly—especially in cyberspace. In late September, an employee at a Seoul securities house began posting rumors about Choi in an online chat room. She accused Choi of being a ruthless loan shark responsible for the suicide of a down-on-his-luck actor who had amassed more than $2 million in debts. Within days, the rumors had spread to hundreds of thousands of chat-room users who posted vicious attacks on Choi's morals and character. Although the rumors were completely fabricated, the chat-room condemnation was more than Choi could take. "I am lonely and I am ostracized," she wrote in her suicide note found on Oct. 2. What do you know?
"When Scripture speaks to us of our salvation it proposes to us three aims. One is that we recognize the inestimable love God has shown toward us, so that He may be glorified by us as He deserves. Another, that we hold our sin in such detestation as is proper, and that we be sufficiently ashamed to humble ourselves before the majesty of our God. The third, that we value our salvation in such a manner that it makes us forsake the world and all that pertains to this frail life, and that we be overjoyed with that inheritance which has been acquired for us at such a price. This is what we ought to fix our attention upon and apply our minds to when it is mentioned to us how the Son of God has redeemed us from eternal death and has acquired for us the heavenly life. We ought, then, in the first place to learn to give God the praise He deserves. In fact, He was well able to rescue us from the unfathomable depths of death in another fashion, but He willed to display the treasures of His infinite goodness when He spared not His only Son. And our Lord Jesus in this matter willed to give us a sure pledge of the care which He had for us when He offered Himself voluntarily to death. For we never shall be keenly touched nor set on fire to praise our God, unless on the other hand we examine our condition, and see that we are as sunk in hell, and know what it is to have provoked the wrath of God and to have Him for a mortal enemy and a judge so terrible and appalling that it would be much better if heaven and earth and all creatures would conspire against us then to approach His majesty while it is unfavorable toward us. So it is very necessary that sinners should be broken-hearted with a feeling and an understanding of their faults, and that they should know themselves to be worse than wretched, so that they may have a horror at their condition, in order that in this way they may know how much they are indebted and obligated to God, that He has pitied them, that He sees them in despair, and that He has been kind enough to help them; not because He sees in them any dignity, but only because He looks upon their wretchedness. Now the fact is also (as we have said), forasmuch as we are surrounded by too much here below and that when God has called us to Himself we are held back by our affection and covetousness, that it is necessary to prize the heavenly life as it deserves, that we may know at how great an expense it was bought for us. " John Calvin

Today I did the unexpected and unusual, bought some literary books for read. It's my desire to read them all before the year is over, and read one book per month. I hope I'll be strict enough with myself to keep this promise in mind. May God help me.

What's the difference between conventionalism and idiomaticy?
I've been studying the theory behind the kinds of fixed expressions the english language has, and this bring us, the poor student who doesn't have enough money to effort a trip to a english speaker country. We have to learn these expression within its original context, naturally, it means the impossibility to digest them since we live in Brazil.

Do is marriage fading away from our society?
On some minutes ago, I had been reading an article analyzing the state of marriage in the western culture, unfortunatly, the research conclusion may surprise even the optmistic one. About 50% of marriages in United States ends up in divorce, and this rate isn't an exception on industrialized countries. There is a worldwide tendency to marriage extinction.

Writting skills
Know how to write is not as easy as we think, it's not only putting the words together and hope the reader understand what do you really meant, organizing the ideas in the clearest way is the first step to be understandble.

How great thou art!
It's very beautiful to me the things only God have the power to do. How He makes happy the most unhappy person, binded by the trap of drugs, sadness, only God can fulfill the gap within the hearts of human. Only He can produce everlasting joy, peace, love.

Vaccin day!
I wonder how are sarampo, caxumba and rubeola's name in english. Well actually, it doesn't matter since I'm protected against these threats even when I don't think I would be infected anyway. But you know how Brazil's policies are, maybe without the paper urging I've being through vaccination, I could'nt be allowed to be part of a company...

The victory is coming pretty soon
When we face a challenge, we have to give all the strengh that exist within our life, the key of the victory is not a secret, you have to be honest and faithfull, be certain that God's hand is in my favor. All the things cooperate for the one who loves God. Concerning this challenge, I use the words of apostle Paul: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith
May God bless me and prepare my soul for the iminent award.

A little rest is required sometimes
Ahhh.... After so many unslept afternoons, today I could spend a good part of my time relaxing iwth a worthy nap I needed so much, all my accumulated fatigue was tamed under the relaxing power the combination of my bed, dark and cold room and a strong rainfall can do with me or any exausted teacher.

"Ahhh.... it's saturday...."
Finally, the saturday arrived bringing me the opportunity to have more time to spend at home, with my family, working on pleasure things and academic tasks, but who said that teachers have indeed breaks? Later on, I have to make a lesson plan to present next week and not mentioning the class I have to teach at North Zone, and else, who said that teachers are human?

"Is today thursday?"
What the.... I realized too late today is friday, there are a good and a bad side of this situation: the bad one is I forgot to post a diary entry in this blog, maybe this could be a problem for me in the future regarding my grade with the discipline, but as I know my dear teacher will consider this as a unusual lack of memory, I must be relieved with it. One the other hand, the good angle for this situation is....
Man, today is friday, there are no classes!

The problem is...
...The only moment I could write a post to this "technological version" of a diary is when I'm totally worn out, no thought or grasp of knowledge can be found in my mind, one message still flashes in my councioussness: "sleep... sleep now... go to sleep, you are too tired to wirte anything now, just go for it man!". You see that is isn't a matter of lazyness but fatigue, not that I don't want to write because I could possibly do something more attractive for my desire.
It's just because I'm exausted, Ya know?

Why did I miss the class today? Perhaps I was too tired to have even strenght to get up of the bed, I couldn't get rid of it, it's a deadly trap for my day, I must learn how to dominate upon it or else... I don't know what would happen if I miss more classes again.

I'm getting there
The day of the showdown is at hand. In some days from now a new time will begin in my life. Working in a better place, with better conditions, little by little, God is providing what I need for an independent and a decent life, adult life, different life.
All I have, All I know, All I am is a result of God mercyness in my life. I owe everything to Him.

"It will start all over again"
When comes to my mind that the weekly routine is about to start, a can feel a acute pain in my heart and in my back also. I'm not saying I don't like my routine: Wake up early in the morning, make a hard work at the college, eat lunch as fast as I can, be on a stressful training course (which by the way, I know I'll be employed by the English course), and finally teach classes twice in the weekdays. At the end of the week, my body and my brain in worn out, without energy to do nothing else, at least regarding to my academic and professional life, my spiritual life intensity increases a lot during the weekend, this is the time I have to work on it.
Not that I don't do so in the weekdays, but.. Ya know?

"Ouch! My back hurts."
What a rushy week it is being to me!
I didn't have any time to do nothing I like, my time has been devoted only to attend my professional and academic obligations, do the people think that we don't need a breaktime for the mind and body? The available tecnology of this time can transfer information from one pole to another in the planet but this can't be applied for people yet.
It would be great for me using a teleportation device, I could do anything I must to and still have some time to take my breath, lay down in my bed, take a nap for 30 minutes at least and continue in this crazy routine. How come being outside home for almost 12 hours and not be worn out? I'm not the superman! I must carefully discover the secrets of those who spent the whole day working and when get home, continue to work in a way that end sleeping at 2 am and have to wake up at 5 am to begin all over again.
I just can't do it. I'm a human being, you know?

My first entry!
At the beginning of this blog, I firstly have to apologize to Isabel for not been writting a diary as she asked all of us to do, but I have my reasons to do such a thing and I expect that in my daily entries in this channel of communication, the explanation will be given alongside with the usage of my great use of my special literary skills. (Who are you trying to fool? hehehehehe)
So, I hope you like it.
